The project to renovate the vocational schools in Witzenhausen, with funding from the German government’s economic action plan, showed that there is nothing old-school about today’s education facilities.

As in most renovation projects, the existing fabric of the buildings was upgraded to incorporate state-of-the-art technology. In addition, the interior space was redistributed to create modern, open learning spaces without doors, ready for the transition to a new educational concept. The new interior layout, minus the traditional hallway, allowed Scandinavian-style self-driven learning methods to be introduced.

A spatial acoustic solution that facilitates flexible use of open-plan learning spaces for a variety of purposes, including intense work, is one of the critical success factors in modern educational methods.
