Champions League in design and acoustics
Ambient background noise is the icing on the cake in stadiums. However, many stadiums also have VIP areas in which it is supposed to be more relaxed during sports and other events. The interplay between an exuberant atmosphere and a comfortable conversation environment is achieved with an effective acoustic concept: just like in the box and business areas of the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg.
Within six weeks, the owners, users and the architects double H - design management Gmbh, transformed the somewhat outdated premises into a state-of-the-art VIP location. A high-performance acoustic ceiling, which harmonises perfectly with an impressive lighting concept, also creates a visually atmospheric ambience.
The architects gave the elongated and almost hall-like VIP area an airy character through different ceiling gradations and colour concepts. They optimised the height sensation exclusively with creative means. For example, they chose a black, homogeneous-looking ceiling for the loge level, which creates the impression that the suspended lights and free-hanging panels are floating in front of an “invisible” background. In contrast, the white ceilings of the surrounding corridors are slightly lowered, so that the area appears more spacious overall.
The architects also created special accents with the indirect lighting, which can be individually coloured depending on the event. Last but not least, the implementation of the visual effects was so successful because the acoustic damping completely covers the system-related substructure.
