The new emergency department at the Lübeck campus of the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein was constructed just over a year ago as an interim solution. It replaces the previous emergency department for the next decade, until the master plan for a new hospital comes to fruition. The building’s upper floor houses an overflow ward for use during the ongoing construction work at the hospital. The modular structure was erected in just six months and is fully reversible. Hygienic acoustic ceilings enable clinicians and nurses to care for their patients in a quiet, discreet environment.

Peace and discretion a key requirement

In the architects’ discussions with doctors, nursing staff and patients, the need for peace and discretion quickly emerged as one of the key design requirements. As a result, bids were invited for a program of spatial acoustic measures that would effectively reduce noise levels and control sound propagation, thereby maximizing privacy and discretion and creating the best conditions for staff and patients.

High hygienic demands for the acoustic material

Because of hospital hygiene regulations, the ability to regularly disinfect the acoustic material was an absolute priority. Ecophon was the only one of the acoustic ceiling manufacturers bidding for the contract that was able to prove adequate disinfectant resistance.

The result: an incredibly quiet work environment that enables doctors and nurses in the hectic emergency department to perform better, while reducing their stress levels.

For emergency patients, the quiet, soothing environment provides a reassuring sense of security.
